At this most astronomical of exhibitions, the star of the show was the brand which knows nothing of inhibitions.
Like Donald Trump, Breitling wouldn't waste time worrying about offending anybody and are adored all the more for it.
When they delicately installed a statue of a woman sitting astride a bomb (larger than life and particular elements especially large) in one of the UKs busiest shopping centres, it provoked both complaints and an increase in sales.
It seemed ironic then that Breitling should provide one of the happier surprises of the show in a delightful and petite (29mm) ladies Galactic. This elegant little gem has the perfect formation of a miniature and it's sheer restraint is almost sarcastic. At first sight, it was as if Longines had dressed the wrong cabinet and I had to double check the logo on the dial.
These were chaperoned by some excellent new men's watches in a very enjoyable presentation.
After it's conspicuous absence last year I was very pleased to finally be introduced properly to the connective B55, which has brains and looks, but my head was mostly turned in the direction of the innovative Avenger Hurricane with its case made out of 'Breitlight'; an ultralight polymer exclusive to Breitling which is three times lighter than titanium. A formidable combination of very crisp dial, the intriguing case and a splendid, smart strap make this watch vividly fit looking. At the same time it has an unassuming quality, as if it doesn't know how excellent it is.
Speedmaster's rich heritage puts it under pressure to deliver special editions for Omega almost year in, year out. It tends not to disappoint, and again this year it provided Omegas most covetable watch.
The Limited Edition 'CK 2998' (2998 pieces) is a steel version of the beautiful gold Speedy shown in 2015. It has a heritage type of case size at just under 40mm but is bang on trend with its deployment of dark blue for the strap, tachymeter bezel and chronograph counters. At £4100, this watch will offer consolation to any poor souls who missed out on Snoopy, and will wave very briefly to the retailer as it flys past and onto the wrist of its lucky new owner.
